Active Rain launches Outside blogs today, but are they a better choice than WordPress?
By Todd Carpenter | June 26, 2008
Brad Andersohn announced the launch of Outside Blogs yesterday. This is Active Rain’s answer to the blossoming blogger who started blogging on Active Rain, but now wants to grow into a more independent blogging platform. Highlights form Brad’s post:
- Host your Blog on your own domain name. (You must own name) ie: BestHomes.com
- Customize the look and feel of your Outside Blog.
- Set up in 10-15 minutes max.
- Build your posts in ActiveRain, no need to learn a new Blogging platform.
- Publish your posts to AR, Localism, Outside Blog, or all three, it’s your choice.
- Benefit from the SEO power of ActiveRain.
- Brand your own Blog and yet stay connected with the AR community.
- Comments are syndicated between your ActiveRain Blog and your Outside Blog.
I think they’re on the right track, but I think the question every RE blogger should consider is, “are Active Rain’s outside blogs better than WordPress?”
There are inherent advantages in Outside Blogs for existing Active Rain members. To add to that, there are few reasons for real estate professionals NOT to be an Active Rain member. But WordPress is still going to offer greater overall flexibility. Which one is best for you is up for debate. At REBlogWorld, you will have an opportunity to hear that debate. Rich Jacobson, from Active Rain, and Dave Smith, certified WordPress fanatic, will square off to discuss the merits of each. Rich has a WordPress Blog, and Dave has been beta testing AR’s outside blogs for some time.
Should be a great debate!

What to expect at REBlogWorld and BlogWorld & New Media Expo
By Todd Carpenter | June 20, 2008
We’ve received a couple emails from folks looking for more details before registering. While the schedule and speakers are confirmed, we will continue fine tuning the details over the summer. However, since you may be about to plunk down your hard earned money here’s what we have planned thus far.
Why BlogWorld?
Our real estate and mortgage event is the lead-in for BlogWorld & New Media Expo. Jason and I attended BlogWorld last year and knew the real estate vertical would benefit. Our initial idea was to operate as one of BlogWorld’s tracks (more on the tracks later). The downside to doing this is that attendees would need to make a choice between real estate focused seminars and other content less specific to real estate.
Rick Calvert, BlogWorld’s head honcho, had a great solution. BlogWorld is a three day event. Last year, the first day was reserved for an exclusive Executives & Entrepreneurs pre-conference. This year we’ll be sharing Friday with the E&E attendees. There’s some additional expense involved in adding a third day (the E&E conference costs nearly twice as much), but we worked with Rick & BlogWorld to deliver all three days for just $50 over the regular BlogWorld price!
We’ve had a couple people ask if they can attend the first day only. The short answer is no. That’s really missing what’s great about this conference. On Saturday and Sunday, you’ll be networking with, learning from, and partying among bloggers and new media gurus from every walk of life. Your opportunity to learn outside of the re.net blogosphere is unprecedented.
On Saturday and Sunday, the twenty plus top real estate and mortgage bloggers (including myself) who are bringing you REBlogWorld, will be sitting next to you in the audience, learning ourselves.
When you register though us, you get one day of REBlogWorld, and Two days of BlogWorld & New Media Expo. Here are more details.
REBlogWorld - Friday, September 19.
After you get registered, we have twelve seminars to choose from, split between two rooms. We’re working on a way to deliver all twelve sessions to you down the road, but no guaranties just yet. Our classes start at 10:00, and run until 6:00. Here’s a look at our schedule.
10:00-11:15
Mariana Wagner will be talking about how to attract traffic from Google, and convert that traffic into leads. Meanwhile Morgan Brown, Mike Price and Daniel Rothemal will have a shared presentation on how to use video to market your real estate or mortgage business on online.
11:30-12:45
Teresa Boardman will be talking about digital imaging. Not just how to take good pictures and put them online, but how to leverage them on social media sites like flickr to develop local relationships and new clients. Dan Green will be showing you how to create credibility in your market, and to your clients with an authoritative blogging style.
12:45-2:00
Lunch! There are a few concession opportunities at the convention center, or you may just want to go out and get some air. This will be a great time to network with others at the show.
2:00 - 2:45
Dustin Luther is going to give us some advice on building, recruiting for, and maintaining a multi-author blog. David Smith and Rich Jacobson are going to be debating the pro’s and cons of WordPress vs Active Rain’s upcoming Outside Blogs.
3:00-3:45
I’m going to show you how to build local referral networks online. Think of it as a spin on Dale Carnagie’s “How To Win Friends and Influence People”… on the web. Kelley Koehler will tell you what to do when Google doesn’t love you. It’s all about how to use and analyze web driven advertising.
4:00-4:45
Jim Duncan has advice on how to engage the local media and market yourself through them. Matt Fagioli, Pat Kitano and Brad Coy will be discussing team blogging and the strategies involved on creating a full brokerage marketing effort online.
5:00 to 6:00
Jeff Turner will show you how to use free, or highly affordable web tools to streamline your business. Meanwhile Mike Mueller, Jason Berman, and a panel of mortgage originators will be quizzing representatives from the latest Mortgage 2.0 companies in a fun competition that you’ll just have to see to fully appreciate. Participants include George Favvas, Jeff Corbet, Dan Green, and a few more to be announced.
The event will be moderated by Kevin Boer, Pat Kitano, and Jan O’Brien.
BlogWorld & New Media Expo Sat & Sun, September 20-21
The schedule is still being nailed down for these two days, but it will resemble last year’s event. When we attended last year, each attendee was able to choose from classes in 10 different seminar tracks. One track was just for beginners. Another was about audio and video. Another was for small business. One was for monetization. There were also specialty tracks for politics, sports, and more. This year’s event even includes mommy blogging.
You don’t have to stay in one track, and that’s the greatest beauty of the event. Every attendee can customize the event to what they want to learn. There are also keynotes throughout the weekend. Last year’s speakers included Matt Mullenweg, Leo Laporte, and Mark Cuban.
I took some pictures at last year’s show, and there’s a ton of them on flickr.
On top of all of that, the world’s largest new media trade show will be taking place and you’re invited to an awesome party on Saturday night. We’re going to work hard, learn hard, and play hard. Three days, after which, your understanding and confidence in how you approach web marketing in the real estate and mortgage vertical will be changed forever.
If you have a question about the event that I didn’t answer, do not hesitate to email me at todd@mariah.com. Let me know a good time to call and I’ll even discuss it over the phone if you like. This isn’t the biggest investment you ever made in your career, but we aim to treat it like it is. Do not hesitate to contact me. If you’re ready to move forward, register here, and we’ll look forward to seeing you in Vegas on September 19th!

Meet our moderators. Jan O’Brien, Kevin Boer, & Pat Kitano
By Todd Carpenter | June 12, 2008
Mariana Wagner, Matt Fagioli, and Jason Berman will all be helping out with some of the moderating duties. But the bulk of all of our seminars will be moderated by Jan O’Brien, Kevin Boer, and Pat Kitano.
If your expectation of this conference is to see a panel of experts being interviewed by a moderator, that’s not exactly what we have in mind. We’ll have one traditional panel and one really fun quasi-panel. But the rest of the show will be focused on individual speaker presentations. Even then, our moderators will play a very important roll in making sure the crowd has ample opportunity to involve themselves in the discussion. For this important roll, we have three excellent personalities on board.
Jan O’Brien - Real Estate Coach
Jan teaches real estate blogging classes in Las Vegas in addition to a being broker salesman at Prudential Americana Group Realtors.
She’s a trainer, recruiter, coach and a speaker who understands new media, and how to market within it.
Kevin Boer - 3 Oceans Real Estate
I first met Kevin in person at Inman Blogger’s connect last year where he did a fantastic job of moderating a panel on social neworking.
Kevin is Broker Owner of 3 Ocean’s Real Estate in San Fransisco and a founding partner at Domus Consulting Group.
Pat Kitano - TransparentRE
I believe Pat holds the record for occupying a place in my feed reader longer than anyone else. Pat’s a long standing proponent of transparency in the real estate industry, and a student of social media marketing. He’s also a founding partner at Domus Consulting Group.

Pictures from our Denver blogging seminar
By Todd Carpenter | June 11, 2008
Jason Berman, Mariana Wagner, and I teamed up to do an “intro to blogging” seminar for the Denver Board of REALTORS today.
We also featured a panel of Denver bloggers including Gretchen Faber, Stacie Staub, Bob Shenkenberger, and Beth Skinner. Thanks to everyone who contributed!
We had about forty people show up and the feedback was very positive. We’ll be doing a couple more of these over the summer.
See the pics on my Flickr account!
We’re promoting events like this all over the country because we simply don’t want you to wait all the way until September to start your blog.
There are events in Phoenix and Chicago tomorrow. And more on the way. If you’re teaching a “introduction to real estate blogging” type seminar, please let us know. We’ll be more than happy to spread the word about it!

Mike Mueller evaluates the future of “mortgage 2.0″
By Todd Carpenter | June 10, 2008
We’re going to play this event close to the vest. So you’ll just have to wait to see how it plays out. What we will tell you is that Mike Mueller will be REBlogWorld’s Simon Cowell. OK, Mike’s actually a heck of a lot nicer, but you get the idea.
Mike’s an avid blogger, including Mike’s Minute, Active Rain, Lenderama, and more. He’s on the social networks. He’s among the first to try new products like Zillow’s mortgage platform. He’s a mortgage 2.0 originator.
Mike is the sort of fellow that any company that wanted to offer a web focused product to loan originators should have on their advisory board. That’s largely what he’ll be doing for us at REBlogWorld.
Our seminar subjects are set. Twelve to choose from, presented by A-list real estate and mortgage bloggers. We’ll have the schedule up by the end of the week. If you’ve been reading this blog, you’ll already have a pretty good idea what we’re going to be talking about. The cliff notes version is,
“Learn how successful real estate and mortgage professionals are using new media to thrive.”
At this point, we’re as excited to be able to attend these events as we’re proud to be presenting them. Early bird pricing ends in ten days. What are you waiting for?
